Odakyu sees mixed bag in august: railway up, retail struggles, hotels vary

Odakyu Electric Railway's preliminary figures for August 2025 indicate a 3.9% year-over-year increase in total railway passenger numbers (commuters and non-commuters combined), reaching 57.6m. This growth contributed to a 5.9% rise in total railway revenue for the month, amounting to JPY 9,810m. Commuter passengers saw a 1.7% increase, while non-commuters experienced a 6.9% surge in passenger numbers.

Conversely, the retail sector, specifically Odakyu Department Stores, reported a challenging August. The Shinjuku Store's sales declined by 1.4% to JPY 2,121m, and the Fujisawa Store saw a 4.3% decrease to JPY 445m. However, the Machida Store recorded a 5.3% increase in sales, reaching JPY 2,194m. In the store division of Odakyu Shoji, existing stores experienced a 0.5% decrease in sales for August, totaling JPY 4,634m.

The hotel segment presented a mixed performance in occupancy rates for August. Hotel Century Southern Tower in Shinjuku recorded an 83.1% occupancy rate, marking a 1.2 percentage point increase year-over-year. Hotel de Yama in Hakone saw a significant 18.2 percentage point rise to 87.5% occupancy. However, Hatsuhana in Hakone experienced a 4.2 percentage point increase in occupancy to 63.6%, while Hakone Yutowa reported a 2.0 percentage point increase to 89.3%. Hotel Clad in Hakone also showed a strong 11.4 percentage point increase in occupancy to 88.0%. Notably, Hakone Highland Hotel was closed for renovation as of May 7, 2025.
