Transurban announces West Gate Tunnel Project to open December 2025

Transurban Group announced today that the West Gate Tunnel Project will open on Sunday, December 14, 2025. This major infrastructure development includes nearly 6.8 kilometers of twin tunnels connecting the West Gate Freeway to the Port of Melbourne and CityLink, offering an alternative to the West Gate Bridge and potentially saving up to 20 minutes on trips. The project also features a new elevated roadway along Footscray Road, multiple new bridges and ramps, and a widened West Gate Freeway with express lanes.

The project is expected to streamline freight movements to the Port of Melbourne and remove over 9,000 trucks daily from residential streets, enhancing liveability and reducing noise and emissions for local communities. The West Gate Tunnel will offer time-of-day pricing for certain trips and a single, capped toll for heavy and long heavy commercial vehicles across both CityLink and the West Gate Tunnel.

Additionally, the project delivers over 14 kilometers of new and upgraded walking and cycling paths, including a 2.5-kilometer elevated veloway above Footscray Road, which opened on December 7, 2025. More than nine hectares of new parks and wetlands have also been created, providing green spaces and environmental renewal.
