CMES takes delivery of world's first methanol dual-fuel VLCC

China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) announced the delivery of the "Kaituo," the world's first methanol dual-fuel Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), from Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. on December 22, 2025. This vessel represents a pioneering move in green shipping and is a key step towards achieving the global shipping industry's long-term carbon neutrality goals.

The "Kaituo" features a flexible dual-fuel power system, capable of operating on traditional fuel or green methanol, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 70% and meets current International Maritime Organization Tier III emission standards. The vessel is also equipped with a desulphurization scrubber and shaft generator.

Following this delivery, CMES's tanker fleet is expected to further enhance its energy saving and carbon reduction capabilities, strengthening its market competitiveness and customer service. As of the announcement date, CMES has 15 tanker orders, including 5 owned VLCCs, 3 long-term leased VLCCs, and 7 owned Aframax vessels, scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2028.
