China Shenhua Energy sees mixed performance: coal declines, chemicals grow in November

China Shenhua Energy Company Limited reported its key operating data for November 2025, revealing a decrease in coal production and sales compared to the previous year. Commodity coal output fell by 4.3% in November to 27.0 million tonnes and 1.4% year-to-date to 304.3 million tonnes. Coal sales decreased by 3.6% in November to 37.0 million tonnes and 7.7% year-to-date to 389.5 million tonnes. Shipping cargo volume and turnover also declined in November, down 10.6% and 21.4% respectively, due to business structure adjustments and changes in shipping routes.

In contrast, the company's coal chemical segment demonstrated strong growth. Polyethylene sales increased by 8.6% in November to 34.1 thousand tonnes and 12.7% year-to-date to 343.4 thousand tonnes. Polypropylene sales rose by 3.6% in November to 28.5 thousand tonnes and 11.3% year-to-date to 315.1 thousand tonnes. This growth is primarily attributed to a lower base in the prior year due to scheduled maintenance of coal-to-olefin production equipment. The reported figures also incorporate business volumes from Hangjin Energy, following its acquisition by the company starting from February 2025.
