China Merchants Energy Shipping expands green fleet with new car carrier

On December 6, 2025, China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) took delivery of the "Shenrong" vessel, a 9,300 Car Equivalent Units methanol dual-fuel pure car and truck carrier, from China Merchants Heavy Industry. This marks the company's second large methanol dual-fuel car carrier, following the "Gangerong," and signifies a crucial step towards mass integration in the green roll-on/roll-off shipping sector.

The "Shenrong" vessel's dual-fuel system allows flexible switching between traditional fuel and methanol, meeting current International Maritime Organization Tier III emission standards. When operating on green methanol, the vessel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 70%. This expansion aims to enhance CMES's operational capacity and market competitiveness, particularly benefiting from the rapid growth of new energy vehicle exports from China.

As of the announcement date, CMES's car carrier fleet comprises 22 operational vessels, with 11 serving inland rivers and 11 for coastal and deep-sea routes. The company also has four 7,800 CEU methanol dual-fuel car carriers on order, scheduled for phased delivery starting in 2026.
