China Merchants Energy Shipping adds first methanol dual-fuel car carrier

On September 17, 2025, China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) took delivery of the "Gang Rong," a 9300 CEU methanol dual-fuel pure car and truck carrier. This vessel marks a significant milestone as the first large-scale car carrier globally to operate with a methanol dual-fuel power system. It is the first of two 9300 CEU and four 7800 CEU methanol dual-fuel vessels ordered by CMES in 2023, designed to operate on both traditional fuel and green methanol, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 70% and meets Tier III emission standards.

The delivery of the "Gang Rong" series will enhance CMES's roll-on/roll-off fleet structure and age profile, strengthening its capacity in the booming international car shipping market. The company’s automotive roll-on/roll-off fleet currently comprises 19 operational vessels across various segments, with an additional five vessels on order, including one 9300 CEU and four 7800 CEU methanol dual-fuel vessels, scheduled for delivery between the second half of 2025 and 2026. This expansion positions CMES to capitalize on the rapid growth of Chinese car exports.
