China Shenhua reports mixed performance in August, coal sales down

China Shenhua Energy Company Limited's core coal business saw slight declines in August 2025, with commodity coal output down 0.3% to 28.6m tonnes and coal sales down 3.1% to 37.5m tonnes compared to August 2024. Year-to-date figures also showed decreases.

In transportation, self-owned railway turnover increased by 10.7% to 28.0bn tonne-kilometers in August. Huanghua Port coal loading volumes also rose by 11.6% to 19.3m tonnes. However, shipping freight volume and turnover declined. Power generation saw an increase, with total power generation up 3.8% to 23.39bn kilowatt-hours.

The chemical segment showed positive year-to-date growth, with polyethylene sales up 17.9% to 248.4 thousand tonnes and polypropylene sales up 13.6% to 225.3 thousand tonnes for the first eight months of 2025. This growth is primarily due to a lower base in the prior year caused by scheduled maintenance. The company notes these figures include operations from Hangjin Energy as of February 2025.
