China Shenhua's coal sales drop in May 2025

China Shenhua Energy (SSE:601088) announced its main operating data for May 2025, revealing a mixed performance. Commodity coal production reached 28.0 million tonnes, and sales volume totaled 32.5 million tonnes, compared to 28.4 million tonnes and 36.4 million tonnes respectively in May 2024. Shipping volumes also decreased, with a drop in both freight volume (9.0 million tonnes vs. 10.5 million tonnes) and turnover volume. However, the sales volumes of polyethylene and polypropylene increased significantly compared to the same period last year, driven by lower base numbers due to equipment maintenance in 2024. The company attributed the coal sales decrease to weaker downstream demand and settlement progress, while shipping declines were blamed on structural and route adjustments. The company also noted that from February 2025 onwards, key operating indicators include figures from Hangjin Energy, a subsidiary that was acquired.
