Elkem reports fatality, injuries at French silicones site

Elkem ASA announced a tragic incident on December 22, 2025, involving an explosion at a pilot workshop within its Elkem Silicones site in Saint-Fons, Lyon, France. The accident resulted in the death of one employee and injuries to three others. Chief executive Helge Aasen expressed deep sympathy and commitment to supporting affected employees and families.

Following the incident, Elkem has temporarily ceased operations at both its North and South sites in Saint-Fons, 1.5 days ahead of the scheduled year-end closure. Both internal investigations by Elkem and external probes by French local authorities have been initiated to determine the cause and implement preventative measures.

Elkem, a global provider of advanced silicon-based materials, reported an operating income of NOK 33 bn in 2024. The company, listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange, employs over 7,200 people globally.
