Scatec completes 120 MW Mmadinare solar cluster in Botswana
Scatec ASA has commenced commercial operation of the second 60 MW phase of the 120 MW Mmadinare Solar Cluster in Botswana, completing its first project portfolio in the country. This follows the first phase, which became operational in March 2025. The entire cluster will generate predictable revenues under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Botswana Power Corporation. Scatec currently owns 100% of the project but plans to invite additional equity partners to reduce its long-term economic interest.
The chief executive, Terje Pilskog, highlighted the project's completion within budget and ahead of schedule. Alberto Gambacorta, evp and gm for Sub-Saharan Africa, noted the facility as Botswana's first utility-scale solar PV facility, crucial for the country's energy ambitions.
Together, the two power plants are projected to generate 280 GWh of clean energy annually, contributing to an estimated abatement of 380,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Scatec will also provide Operation & Maintenance and Asset Management services for the power plants.
