Capsol technologies secures exclusive US utility deal for carbon capture

Capsol Technologies ASA has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a major US utility, granting exclusivity for the development of the first commercial-scale low-carbon gas power plant utilizing CapsolGT® carbon capture technology in the US. This project marks the initial commercial-scale application of CapsolGT® for gas-fired power generation within the North American utility market, with Capsol supporting project development through to final investment decision (FID).

CapsolGT® is designed as an energy-efficient carbon capture solution specifically for simple-cycle gas turbines, capable of capturing over 95% of CO2 directly from turbine exhaust while reusing waste heat to generate surplus electricity. Philipp Staggat, chief product officer, highlighted the technology's aim to be the cost leader for decarbonizing existing gas turbine plants. The solution targets low-carbon, dispatchable power generation, ideal for the rapidly expanding data center market.

With natural gas accounting for approximately 36% of the total US electricity supply in 2024, the market for CapsolGT® presents significant potential. The MoU also includes provisions for evaluating broader deployment of CapsolGT® across the utility's portfolio, encompassing both brownfield and greenfield projects.
