Norconsult wins major hydropower contract with Norsk Hydro

Norconsult ASA has been contracted by Norsk Hydro to provide detail design and technical support for the Illvatn pumped storage hydropower plant in Luster, Vestland County, Norway. The project includes the design of a new 12 km 132 kV overhead line, with Norconsult also assisting Hydro with project execution.

The Illvatn project will enable Hydro to optimize water use in the Fortun hydropower system, reducing water loss in summer and providing additional power generation during high-demand winter periods. Once commissioned, the plant will pump water up to 360 meters and generate a net 107 GWh of renewable power annually.

Construction started in late 2025 and is projected to span four and a half years, with completion anticipated in the first half of 2030. Norconsult emphasizes its expertise in pumped storage hydropower in Norway through this collaboration.
