Contact Energy secures 7-year government gas supply deal

Contact Energy has signed an All of Government agreement with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) to supply gas from October 1, 2025. This seven-year contract will provide around 1.65 PJ of gas annually to approximately 100 government agencies and institutions, including schools and hospitals. This ensures supply certainty when the current government supplier agreement expires on September 30, 2025.

The deal follows Contact's July 2025 securing of up to 7 PJs of gas per year until 2032 from Greymouth Gas New Zealand Limited (GGNZ Ltd). This long-term gas supply will enable Contact to support hundreds more New Zealand businesses, critical gas consumers, and thousands of Kiwi households as they transition towards a renewable energy future.

Contact chief executive Mike Fuge stated that the company has committed to investing over $2 bn in building critical renewable energy infrastructure to support New Zealand's economic growth. These actions for medium-term gas security will support essential institutions and businesses, helping them operate and transition to a renewable energy future.
