Meridian Energy reports strong August retail sales growth, customer connections jump

Meridian Energy announced a robust performance in August 2025, with retail sales volumes increasing by 12.8% compared to August 2024. Residential segment sales saw a significant jump of 35.3%, including Flick customers, while small-medium business sales rose by 7.2%, large business by 14.6%, agriculture by 2.2%, and corporate by 4.3%. Total New Zealand customer connections reached 450,317, up from 371,479 in August 2024.

Despite the strong sales, national hydro storage decreased from 87% to 79% of the historical average by September 8, 2025, with South Island storage at 73% and North Island at 98% of average. Meridian's August 2025 monthly total inflows were 73% of the historical average. Generation in August 2025 was 22.1% higher than the same month last year, driven by higher hydro generation but offset by lower wind generation.

National electricity demand in August 2025 was 5.9% higher than August 2024, with the New Zealand Aluminium Smelters (NZAS) averaging a load of 565MW. The average price Meridian received for its generation in August 2025 was $176.6/MWh, while the average price paid to supply customers was $184.4/MWh.
