Godawari Power & Ispat expands BESS project fourfold to 40 GWh

Godawari Power & Ispat Limited (GPIL) has approved an expansion of its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project capacity from an initial 10 GWh to 40 GWh. The first phase will see capacity increase to 20 GWh, with a total investment of INR 1625 Crores across two phases. Phase 1, targeting 20 GWh by FY26-27, is budgeted at INR 1025 Crores, while Phase 2 will add another 20 GWh by FY28-29 with an investment of INR 600 Crores.

The decision to increase the project's capacity from 10 GWh to 20 GWh in the first phase aims to leverage a single line unit for 20 GWh per annum manufacturing, leading to better land utilization, reduced building structural costs, and lower overall investment. This is expected to result in savings in manufacturing costs and higher operating margins for BESS.

The 20 GWh BESS project is anticipated to commence commercial operations in Q1 FY2027-28. Funding will comprise debt raised by GNEPL and equity infusion from GPIL's internal accruals. The board of directors approved this proposal on December 12, 2025.
