Balu Forge unveils automated empty shell production line in India

Balu Forge Industries Ltd announced the launch of its 100% Make-in-India automated empty shell production line at its Belgaum, Karnataka campus on December 10, 2025. This facility, powered by near-100% automation and FANUC Robotics, boasts an annual production capacity of 360,000 shells for large caliber ammunition projectiles. The entire forging line, designed in-house with over 18 machinery manufacturers involved, operates unmanned with a cycle time of 55 seconds.

This strategic expansion strengthens India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' defense ecosystem, allowing Balu Forge to deliver advanced machining solutions for critical applications. The company plans to further expand this production line to meet both global and domestic demand, with additional high-precision production lines to be rolled out in phases.

Trimaan Chandock, executive director at Balu Forge, highlighted that the new line diversifies the company's capabilities to include 155 mm, 120 mm, 105 mm, and 81 mm empty shells. This advanced automation technology represents a significant technological achievement for both the company and the Indian defense industry.
