MTNL faces regulatory fines, submits sustainability report

MTNL has submitted its Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) for FY 2024-25, highlighting key operational details and sustainability initiatives. The report indicates a total employee count of 3031, with 2450 males and 581 females, and 100% permanent employee coverage for health insurance. The company reported a total turnover of INR 1,307.02 Crore for the fiscal year. Telecommunications remain its core business, accounting for 100% of its turnover, primarily through wired (97.96%) and wireless (2.22%) activities.

However, the company also reported monetary penalties totaling INR 46,13,800/-, imposed by NSE and BSE for non-compliance with SEBI (LODR) Regulations, 2015, particularly concerning the composition of its board of directors and various committees. Additionally, TRAI levied financial disincentives of INR 3,00,000/- on two separate occasions for contravention of Quality of Service regulations for broadband and basic/cellular mobile telephone services. MTNL has appealed these monetary actions.

In terms of social and environmental performance, MTNL notes it is a service provider, not involved in manufacturing, and has no R&D investments in specific technologies to improve environmental and social impacts. The company reported two complaints of sexual harassment for FY 2024-25. Total energy consumption for FY 2024-25 was 3,455,847,218.23 units, with its Mumbai Unit undertaking various steps to reduce power consumption.
