NHPC appoints Bhupender Gupta as chairman and managing director

Bhupender Gupta has been appointed chairman and managing director of NHPC Limited, effective September 4, 2025. This appointment, made by the Ministry of Power, is for a five-year term, or until his superannuation on October 31, 2030, or until further orders, whichever is earliest. Gupta assumed charge on September 4, 2025.

In connection with this appointment, Sanjay Kumar Singh, director (projects) at NHPC Limited, ceases to hold the additional charge of chairman and managing director. Gupta is not related to any directors of the company and is not debarred from holding the office of director by any regulatory authority. He also currently holds the additional charge of chairman and managing director, SJVN Limited, since May 1, 2025.

Gupta brings over 34 years of experience, including 31 years in Power CPSUs, with a background in electrical engineering and an MBA in Operations Management. His career includes leadership roles at ACC Ltd, SJVN, REC Ltd., Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority, and THDCIL, spanning various aspects of hydropower, thermal, renewable energy, transmission, and distribution projects.
