China Shenhua's May coal sales dip, chemical sales surge

China Shenhua Energy Company Limited (HKEX: 1088) announced its major operational data for May 2025, revealing a mixed performance across its key segments. Commercial coal production saw a slight decrease of 1.4% year-on-year to 28.0 million tonnes, while coal sales dropped by 10.7% to 32.5 million tonnes, attributed to weaker downstream demand and settlement progress. Transportation turnover also experienced a 1.9% increase to 26.5 billion tonne kilometres. Gross power generation decreased by 9.1% to 15.22 billion kwh. In contrast, the coal chemicals division showed strong growth, with polyethylene sales surging by 239.1% to 31.2 thousand tonnes and polypropylene sales increasing by 235.2% to 29.5 thousand tonnes, driven by a lower base due to maintenance in the previous year.
